I grew up in this area and me and my high school friends would always rush here for our lunch break and it was great. However, 3 years later, coming back from college, the place has changed. It is awful! I have added some photos of this 5 Guys and it is terrible. Everything was unbelievably messy (piles of trash and peanuts all over the place) the trashcan look liked it had overflowed hours ago. Worse yet, I went at night and there were very few people there YET it still took a long time for me to get my food (which they messed up....all I wanted was mustard and lettuce!) The people that worked there seemed tired and disconnected. They only plus is me and my sister got to bond with some other people waiting for their food on the terrible condition of this place. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because it never use to be this bad but it is unbelievable that the people working there let it get that bad!

I just tried Shake Shack...and Im sorry but that place has NOTHING on Five Guys....omg the burger is salted just enough...and i add jalepenos which kick it up a notch...and dont even get me started on the hand cut fries...wow...and i love the new digital soda dispenser with all the buttons/choices to make a nice "suicide" drink...

Dirty, dirty, burgers. And that's what's so delicious. They'll give you a mountain of fries and warm happy feeling. It's the old stand-by of east-coast burgers and they'll never disappoint.

As I am new to the Philadelphia area, I have not tried a lot of burger places in the area, so my review is relative to the places I have tried around the country. This place reminds me of Crazy Jim's Blimpy Burger, an Ann Arbor staple. Their fries are better though, not as greesy. I like how they dump your fries at the bottom of the brown paper bag your food comes in, helps soak up the extra greese from frying. I got the single cheeseburger, with everything (pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, grilled onions, ketchup, mustard, and mayo) along with cajun fries. The burger was lacking in flavor, but I believe the intent is to get your flavor from your choice of toppings. The fries are amazing, almost worth the trip in just for them. Come hungry, as this is not typical diet fare. The roasted peanuts while you wait are a nice touch, to tide you over until your buger is made right before your eyes.

Five guys burgers are like crack, although I've never tried crack, the food is just addictive like crack, because I heard crack was addictive so I'm comparing five guys to crack addictiveness lol. Anyhoot, as soon as you come through the doors the staff is screaming "hey big daddy"...just kidding lol. Actually they scream out two burgers or something like that too get your food started early, which is cool because they cook on the spot and it's fresh and cooked in peanut oil, and it doesn't just sit around collecting bacteria and mini bugs are getting first dibs on your nugget before you do ! They have excellent fries and throwback sodapop in all kinds of flavors (no grape drink though) lol. And why you wait for thee delicious juicy burger and fries, you can enjoy some peanuts, not my twist, but if it's yours, there's plenty and they are free, heck you can go there get full off of peanuts and save your burger and fries for dinner ! Just kidding you cheap buzzards lol, so go by there and show the Guys some love, Peace !

Franz here - when Hans wasn't looking I decided to give the Five Guys a chance for redemption, and I must say, perhaps Hans is a complete moron, because their burger was pretty good this time! You start with the greasy bag - I compare this to America, in that first you say, "look at this horrifying mess!" - but then after you get into it, you start to like it. And like it a lot - they post where today's potatoes are from, and I must say the fries had a very fresh potato flavor. I did not notice this the last time. I got two cheeseburgers "all the way", because that is the only way Hans and Franz do things. After devouring my double patty burger I did indeed feel pumped up. So I ate Hans's burger too! No doubt I will win our inevitable confrontation with the power of the Five Guys burgers in my belly - I will pound his face until it is flat like a burger, and he will understand the power of the Five Guys. There may be better gourmet burgers out there - why do they not offer cheeses such as cheddar? Still, a this is a messy good time.

burgers are always good. as others have said, they are usually a well-placed mess. place is usually pretty clean and the staff is pretty friendly. it can add up quickly but a medium fries can be enough for two people

Well, this is as close to In-N-Out as I have had in the East. In-N-Out gets five stars. I like eating the in-shell peanuts while I wait for my burger. And you always get a bag absolutely *filled* with fries, so order the small! This is not the cheapest fast food burger out there, but you do get what you pay for in this case. I like that they offer a list of "standard toppings" plus a few others. You can then mix and match and make the burger just what you like. It is a pretty extensive list of toppings, too. Lettuce, tomato, onion, all the way to sauteed mushrooms and the like. They even have malt vinegar on hand for your fries, if you like that sort of thing, like I do. Also, I do believe the cheese on the cheeseburger is a real slice of cheese. It is not plastic wrapped, processed "cheesefood". That's a good thing as no one should eat cheesefood. Ever.

This is the first Five Guys I had ever experienced and I was hooked immediately! Fresh, yummy burger goodness served up in a brown paper bag with a heaping bag o' fries --- can you ask for anything more? Fresh toppings -- done... you got it... My only beef with this particular location (see my review of the Allentown location which got 5 stars) is that the wait is substantial at times and I've gotten not hot fries a couple of times and it is slightly more expensive than the Allentown location making it a $10+ lunch which I shy away from...

Best Five Guys I have ever patronized. Greatest feature is the staff - pleasant, attentive, sometimes even deliver the food right to your table. Manager regularly patrols the seating area asking if everything is ok. I can't remember the last time I saw that happen even in fine dining locations. Burgers are always good. Fries are awesome. One downside, the floor in the bathroom does feel a little greasy (need to segregate or rotate mops better). I will continue to return as long as my cholesterol allows.

I don't eat meat that is not Halal or Kosher so I always get the same thing here: the Kosher Hot Dog. Made with Hebrew National hot dogs, and you can get it like the burgers, WITH EVERYTHING! Sauteed mushrooms and onions on a perfectly spiced kosher hot dog is such a rare treat for me. Then add in the unlimited drinks and peanuts, and the (seemingly) unlimited fries, you will definitely enjoy your meal here. Nice to see where your potatoes come from; they have it written up on a white board "Today's fries from So-and-So Family Farm in Boonie County, State". I'm not a booushy girl from the west coast, just a simple girl from Philadelphia, so I can't comment or compare to In-and-Out. Update: looks like one will be opening up in NE Philly, next to the new LA Fitness no doubt. I laughed out loud when i saw.

Why are these hamburgers so good? The two times I've been to Five Guys, I spent the whole meal trying to figure out. I don't actually think that the ingredients are of unusually high quality; the cheese is American slices (plastic cheese), and the buns seem like the cheap kind you get at the grocery store. My wife has a theory that beef isn't ground up as much a other places, but I'm not sure that could have such a big impact on taste. Regardless, I don't think I've had a better burger anywhere. The Cajun fries are pretty tasty, too. I'm a pretty big eater, but I've concluded that small burger, and sharing a small fries is enough for a meal.

Everyone raves about this joint and aside from the fresh-cut fries (deadly good with vinegar), I didn't feel like it was anything special. The handful of times I have been here have been a huge long wait for mediocre eats. Maybe I am just not one of those folk that needs a grease fix regularly.

All I heard before coming to this place was that this place has the best burger in the city. So I ventured out to Bala Cynwyd for good ol' burgers. What I found here was less than average burger and slightly better than average fries. I'll rant a bit... -I do like that they use fresh potatoes, but do they really need to stack them up outside the kitchen? -The floor near the kitchen is super slippery due to the oil splatter from the kitchen. It's not only gross but very unsafe. -The burger meat is cooked through and there's no other way of getting it. -The patties are thin and the sauce mixture on the burger reminds me of Whopper. -The line was long, and once you order the food, it takes about 10 minutes to get the food. It's no longer fast food. So Five Guys position themselves in weird place in the burger business. They are no where as efficient as fast food chains like Wendy's and Burger Kings (to which I would compare the quality of their bugers). Yet their burgers are nowhere as good as some places that serve really good burgers with quality meat, cooked medium.

When I first moved to Philly, my co-workers and I agreed that we would start going out to lunch one day a week. We exhausted the options in North Philly pretty quickly, so someone suggested we drive to Five Guys...I said "What's Five Guys?" Well...my life changed from that moment forward. Five Guys is the In-N-Out Burger of the Northeast. I don't eat red meat that often (actually, I don't eat it at all anymore)...but this place is definitely the spot for a burger. And even if you're a vegetarian, just go for those Cajun fries!

  • Erin B.

these burgers are thick, juicy cheesy bites of deliciousness. i never leave feeling hungry, maybe because the burgers are so filling (i always get plain bacon and cheeseburger- no toppings because i am a daredevil- willing to taste the actual meaty flavors without a buffer). maybe its because i eat lots of peanuts while i wait, or maybe its the large quantity of authentic beach fries i get packed into a brown paper bag (which please note MUST be smothered with malt vinegar, just like on the boardwalk). regardless, always a winner in my book, not just this location, but every 5 guys i have been to is superb. if you have a reason to hate 5 guys, then you must be the problem, because its definitely not the food's fault.

My favorite Five Guys in the area. It's not as small and crowded as the one in Center City (which is much closer to me) and that alone makes it worth stopping by when you're out in this area. The employees are always friendly and the service is quick. Plus, as with any Five Guys, when you order fries, they just fill up the whole damn bag. Never a complaint from me!

  • Andre D.

I love five guys. Even faster when you place the order by phone. Doube bacon cheeseburger and cajun fries and you'll never go wrong. Regular fries are great too. They just pile em up in the bag. Grease everywhere! Live a little!

In the search for a temporary In-N-Out Burger replacement, the two contenders are 5 Guys and Elevation Burger. And after 12 rounds of slugging it out.... the winner by split decision is.... 5 Guys. I can't put my finger on it, but this place is just a little better than Elevation. Not by a huge margin, but it is better.

Sunday lunch on a day of running errands. This place is usually my workweek treat to myself. Today the weekend staff was a bit off. My cheeseburger had been deconstructed when it was built wherein my toppings had fallen off to one side. Still tasty though. Can always count on 5 Guys when I'm in this part of town.

When Five Guys opened on City Ave a few years ago, I was happy that there would be a closer location to our home. Anyways, for me, this location is a hit and miss. Out of maybe the four times I ordered from here, I was satisfied once. There is a wait at about every Five Guys I've entered, so that's not the problem. I feel like the food is made sloppy here. On other occasions condiments have just been smashed on a burger or hot dog. And the fries have always sucked. Two nights ago, my mom commented on how the cajun fries were not that good. And that was before I even said anything about this location. So, if you're really hungry and you're in that area and don't feel like traveling far, maybe you should skip this place anyway. Sorry. I believe in giving everyone a second or third chance, but I'm really quite done with the Five Guy's location.

The burgers are delicious, the fries are the best in the world, however the service is only so-so. Often they mess up my order. This is not just a problem with this specific five guys, it is a problem at all of them. However, the manager was very helpful when I complained. I got a brand new burger in about 5 minutes.

Ah, love Five Guys. I've only been twice, but both times it has been great. The burgers are fabulous, and the fries are even better! I tried the veggie sandwich today, which was basically a cheeseburger sans meat. Who knew. It was still great though! And Matt got a cheese dog, which was also surprisingly good! I'm totally a fan. Oh, and best sign on in the shop: "Willy Wonkas of Burgercraft"

Ok, first impression - seeing all of the college kids around made me feel like I was somehow going back a few years to my undergrad days. My friend and I walked up and ordered, and they were very friendly. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger (fat, I know), with the regular burger toppings, and I when I asked for onion, the guy taking my order asked if I wanted it raw or fried - which was great b/c I HATE cooked onions. We waited about 15 minutes, but after tasting the food, it was well worth it. The burger was juicy and flavorful and the fries were really, really good. The portions are huge too, I got a regular fry, and by the time I finished eating the ones that fell in my bag, I was almost full - and I hadn't even gotten to the majority of them in the cup. I'll go back, but my visits will be VERY infrequent - b/c I'm sure all of the grease and fat aren't good for the arteries.

I have heard a lot about Five Guys and had high hope for this visit. At the end, In-and-out is still my favorite burger joint. 1. Meat: Five guys has more meat but lack of the "greasy beef flavor". In-and-out is 'beefy". Advantage: In-and-out. 2. Sauce: In-and-Out's animal style is definitely more flavorful than A1 or BBQ sauce at Five Guys. Advantage: In-and-Out. 3. Toppings: Five guys has a lot more toppings, bacons, onion rings etc. In-and-Out is limited. Advantage: Five Guys. 4. Fun factors: Five guys has free peanuts. In-and-Out has many "secret menu": 2*2, 4*4, protein style, animal style, Dutchman......Advantage : In-and-Out. Overall, In-and-Out definitely has better burgers.

Best burgers ever. The flavor is great. From Washington to Philadelphia the taste is the same. Awsome fries and top fountain drinks. Better then any other I have ever had. Yum!!!

This place revels in their simplicity. Nothing fancy but oh. my. god. Amazing burgers. Piles of fresh cut fries (two people can easily split a regular order) put in a paper sack to collect the grease. Is there anything better?

  • Alissa J.

Damn good hamburgers. Service is sometimes slow- only because I sometimes go on my to work and am in a rush. Love the free toppings. They give you extra extra fries. Love the Cajun fries- yum.... Price is a little steep. So, the sometimes slow service and price make it a 4 star instead of 5 star.

Went here with a few friends after a day at school. Out of the eight of us that went here three ended up getting sick and one even ended up in the hospital. This place is not clean and I would not recommend it to anyone, at least not that the location on city line ave.

so greasy and so heavy. Makes you feel terrible physically and makes you judge yourself harshly for allowing yourself to eat this slop. Ugh.. Go to Bobby's Burger Palace.

Over the years, I've fallen in and out of love with other burgers/burger joints, but I've always come back to Five Guys. Mostly the free toppings, but now also because of the "little" fry that actually contains a manageable amount of fries for one person. This Five Guys stands out because of the Coke Freestyle machines (these are in short supply and I'm like a kid in a candy store when I find these) and the incredible customer service. Seriously, never before seen such friendly and helpful employees at a burger joint. Biggest con is that not all of the soda syrups are stocked in the machine every time. PLUS, Five Guys always has great (ie, classic rock) music playing in the background, which tickles my fancy, of course.

Stopped by for dinner after work and shopping at Target and feeling drained. What perked me up was remembering the french fries and the bottles of malt vinegar and not really being a red meat eater, the veggie option. My friend wanted to come here for the cheese burger and loved her little cheese burger and fries. I ordered veggie sandwich with cheese (also can order without cheese). It was a sloppy sandwich of goodness, veggies and cheese oozing out. Delicious and filling. The soda machine is new and places are getting these type of machine with 100 choices. So I had the Diet Barq's. Very tasty. This is a nice treat, every once in awhile!

I'm judging myself for liking this place so much. But I won't let it stop all of you yelp citizens to stop by here. The service, speed and quality all are exceeding expectations at this location. I can't do the whole burger with two patties so I always get the little burger with just one pattie. It's perfect. Fries are so fresh and delicious whether it's regular or seasoned. The soda machine...this is where all the fun lies - so many options!!! I always get diet fanta (I know, why diet?) with peach flavor. It's so good! Service..that's what I'm most impressed with. I am always greeted with smiles and there's one employee (short, female employee) who seems to be expediting most of the time when I'm here and she is so pleasant! Always cleaning up the floor, asking people how everything is and making sure all the customers are getting their food in a reasonable time. I am so impressed with her!!! Anyways... I get five guys whenever I feel like I can't handle my life anymore. And you know what? It works.

Big disgusting mess of a burger and they taste amazing for it. A regular burger, is a double burger and the fries don't even seem to stop. if you just want to hog out and screw the consequences and order a burger, large fries and a soda. You'll love it while you eat it, and hate yourself afterwards; but in a good way?

On point every time. Burger meat tastes delicious. Could be a little better put together though. Either way you can't go wrong.

Good burger, inadequate bun, great fries, nice soft drink selection, good condiments, good service, But $13 bucks for a burger, small fries and a soda??? I think I can do better for the price.

LOVE Five Guys. I always saw this place when I visited Michael's but never really paid it any mind. I've known friends who went there and said it was good but no one ever RAVED about it, so I was never really worried about trying it until I saw a You Tube video of a guy who does Video reviews of Fast Food places and he made me want to try (Five Guys you can thank him later). I loveeee it, the burgers are hot, fresh and served in a brown paper bag. The fries are also put in a bag, and I love that they are also hot and fresh. One of the things I love best (besides the free peanuts while you wait) is that it's made to order and all topping are free. I highly recommend this place!

After living in NYC for a year and having Shake Shack as my go-to, I was really wondering if Five Guys was really as great as I thought it was when I lived back in Philly- and it still is! It's a "disgusting good burger." No, I don't mean like McD's where the contents are questionable, but like just a good burger for what it should be. There are a lot more pretenders out there, trying to make the burger "gourmet" or "healthy". We all know that this doesn't exist. Gourmet to me is like the Peter Luger burger or the Village Whiskey burger but that's about it. Why people compare this to In-and-Out or Shake Shack or McD's, is beyond me. This place stands on its own with basic burger that comes with 2 patties, free toppings even sauteed mushrooms, and fresh cut fries. I love Five Guys because it doesn't pretend to be what it's not. A burger is a burger, and this place hits spot.

I haven't been here in awhile to ingest the artery clogging burgers that are Oh so bad for you ! But, taste Oh, so good ! During my most recent visit, (yesterday afternoon) I was very pleasantly surprised to see that things looked cleaner than usual. For awhile, this place was messy and obnoxious and a bit much for me to take in. It was also more quieter when I walked in. Five guys is usually noisy & can get a bit crowded. So this is how Five Guys works. You walk in order your food & drinks at the register. You can stay or take it to go. You can either wait for your food or sit down have a drink, some peanuts & wait for your order number to be called. You then pick up your bag of grease, sit down & consume it. I recommend trying the Cajun Fries if your stomach can handle the spice. If your a vegetarian, they do have grilled cheese, & veggie sandwiches. I do not recommend coming here if you have food allergies however. If your in your sweats or bummy clothes & your in the mood for a burger that is a bit more high quality then your local fast food then you should stop in. Parking here is easy to find there is a huge parking lot. This burger place is in a small shopping center by the acme, olive garden etc., Parking can get chaotic but, finding a spot is usually relatively easy.

Oooh, this place is Sooo good. The burgers are all well done but still are so juicy that they taste wonderful. Burgers have lots of custom toppings. French fries are from real potatoes and taste wonderful. You can't oh wrong with this ave if you like burgers and fries. I like to eat healthier, but you can't beat this place for a change of pace.

Absolutely great burgers the fries are made to order cut fresh free peanuts all you can drink sodas an juice bet you'll like it!!

I've been to Five Guys a number of times. You have also probably been there a number of times. They have a damn good roadside-type burger. Skinny patties, soft mashable bun - hold on - why am I describing this to you - you've been there before. Very good fries, with which they are NOT stingy - they fill your fry container and then scoop extra into the bag. So three stars? Why only three stars? Because when taking my first bite at a slightly greasy Five guys table, as my feet slide around on a slightly greasy Five Guys floor, I kind of wish I was at Shake Shack and Bobby's Burger Palace. There should be a way to give 3.75 stars. Then I'd give Five Guys 3.75 stars. Apparently I feeling guilty about only giving them 3 stars.

Only one other burger place compares and that's shake shack. When I'm in the mood for great food and large belly-filling portions five guys is the place to go. With the free peanuts to top it all off it's impossible to go home hungry. I do wish they served some sort of ice cream though.

Five Guys is what a burger joint should be. Simple, clean, and flavorful. I first experienced FG in DC while on visit to a friend in college a few years back. When they opened a Philly location, I lost my mind. Everything is fresh. The meat isn't frozen, the lettuce is hand washed and cut fresh, and the fries aren't more than 5-10 minutes old. They know how to deliver on food quality. Customer service is pretty high. They rock. If you order pick-up, they make you feel like a king when you arrive. You'll understand when you order. The only reason they don't get that fifth star: location. I hate the Bala Cynwyd shopping center. Because it's a strip mall, this location closes fairly early. Boo to that, I say!

I used to go to Five Guys a couple times a month when I lived in NY, and I always loved it. But its been a while since I've been to one. Went to this one tonight, and wasn't impressed. The burger was as good as I would expect, but I feel like the prices have gone up, and one of the great things about Five Guys was always the excessive amount of fries they gave you. This one didn't go big on the fries, and though the staff was nice, they were slow, especially considering it wasn't busy.

So good, yet so so bad. I feel like Louie C.K. in an ep of Lucy Louie where he doesn't want his wife to know how many donuts he actually gets. I go the 5 Guys to binge on delicious shame food and I think I have a problem.
